Description

This gemstone is an unusually large Black Star Diopside which is often referred to as the "Black Star of India".  It is an oval cabochon cut and nicely polished. The phenomenal effect of the four point star of light is caused by needle-like inclusions deep within the stone that causes Asterism (the star effect). This particular star in this gem has a long line of light lengthwise and a shorter line of light that crosses the longer line and moves up and down in the center of the long line. The long line itself shifts a little bit from side to side. Sometimes, as the lines move with the light the effect looks like an X and sometimes it looks like a cross since the top line is shorter than the longer line. It is a hard effect to show in photos, but I hope you can see it. as I slowly moved the stone a bit in each photo. The star lines are visible when light directly hits the top of the stone. The last photo shows the flat back of the gem.This stone weighs in at about 15.35cts and measures 18X13mm - you can see the exact measurements in the photos of the gem in the milometer gauge. It is 7mm in depth. It would make a huge ring for an average to large hand, or a fabulous mysterious pendant. The stone is opaque with a vitreous luster. If you like large stones you might enjoy adding this one to your collection or use if for a unique piece of custom jewelry. It is suitable to wear for both women and men.
I have decided to sell some gemstones that at one time I had the intention to use, but never got around to it. Keep in mind, that photos of gemstones are enlarged to show details are much smaller than in the photos, so please pay close attention to the dimensions. The colors might look different on different monitors so double check my description for color. I always say the weight is "about" a certain amount of carats because I realize that not all weight scales weigh in exactly the same and can be off by a tiny fraction up or down, but all in all my weight calculations are fairly accurate. Although I call the stone pre-owned because I owned it a long time, it is new condition - never used and has been stored carefully.
Please note I am not a gem dealer, although I probably have more knowledge about gemstones than most people since I have been collecting stones my entire life and studied color stones with the GIA. I'm just selling a few pieces I that never had the opportunity to use, and I'd like to see them go to someone who will enjoy and use them. I am not a store so I do not accept returns, as my goal is to thin out my collections, so please be sure you really love this gemstone before you buy it.
