    Description

This is a vintage 1970s southern airways industrial airport sign in excellent vintage condition. This sign has an amazing story behind it. This sign was pulled directly from the airport where Southern Airways Flight 242, a jet that executed a forced landing on a highway in New Hope, Paulding County, Georgia, just outside Atlanta, after suffering hail damage and losing thrust on both engines in a severe thunderstorm on April 4, 1977. The fatal accident was responsible for killing 70 people including 60 passengers, 2 crew members and 8 people on the ground, 2 years after the accident southern airways was bought out and began a series of merges and is no longer in business, so this is an extremely rare piece of airline history. The sign is in excellent vintage condition and has a few signs of wear, but nothing major. The signs letters and wavy design are made of wood which are attached to the blue backing by small metal pegs. The backing is in excellent vintage condition as well. This is an industrial sign and weighs about 45 pounds, please feel free to ask any questions.
